STATEMENT: San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority is Awarded $204 Million in Funding for Delta-Mendota Canal Subsidence Correction Project

The San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority expresses its sincere gratitude to the Bureau of Reclamation for allocating $204 million in funding toward the Delta-Mendota Canal Subsidence Correction Project. This crucial funding, made possible through the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act (IIJA) will significantly improve the reliability of water deliveries to the Water Authority’s member agencies, including some of the most productive food-producing farmland in the United States, its innovative technology center in Silicon Valley and managed wetlands of critical importance to migratory waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway.

The investment will contribute to ongoing efforts to correct subsidence impacts on the Delta-Mendota Canal, critical conveyance infrastructure for the Central Valley Project. The conveyance restoration project will restore the canal’s capacity to deliver water efficiently to farmland, communities, and ecosystems that are essential to the region’s economic and environmental productivity.

Federico Barajas, Executive Director of the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority, stated, “We are deeply appreciative of this important funding from the Bureau of Reclamation. This investment will accelerate our mutual efforts to restore the capacity of the Delta-Mendota Canal, ensuring reliable water delivery to communities that produce our nation’s food and technological innovation and the wildlife and wildlife enthusiasts that rely on the Pacific Flyway. This investment is a significant step forward towards restoring our water infrastructure to support future generations.”

This funding is part of a larger initiative by the Bureau of Reclamation, which is investing $8.3 billion for water infrastructure projects. The Delta-Mendota Canal Subsidence Correction Project is an example of what can be done to revitalize aging water infrastructure and advance drought resilience in regions of importance to the nation’s food security and innovation economies .
